Day 44—Wednesday, September 14—Silverthorne to Frisco
17 miles
From the recreation area, it was about 7 miles to Silverthorne; maybe I missed something but the best and only thing I liked about Silverthorne was a bike path that started north of the town and continued all the way to Frisco.
Silverthorne is a terrible example of "factory-outletville"—all chain stores. If there was any integrity to the urban center I missed it. Ugh; I shake the dust of this town from my biking boots.
The bike path climbed out of Silverthorne to summit the Dillon dam which must have been some kind of engineering feat to provide potable water to Denver. The path continued to Frisco which was smaller but more similar to Steamboat; lovely walking street, nice pedestrian scale, and few chain stores.
Because of approaching rain, I got a room at the Snowshoe Motel, took a bath and felt like it was the road dust that must have been keeping me upright. Ate lunch, walked the town, and grabbed a nap (first one in months).
Why Frisco? Because it’s about an hour from KT and Erickson who joined me for dinner! Somewhat surreal to meet up with them in the middle of this trip: familiarity in a context of the new, solitary, and unfamiliar. I figure I have spent 90%+ of my time on this trip as a solo biker/camper (and that has been OK).
It was a big treat to spend time with KT and Erickson only three weeks before their wedding!
very cool and global
