1985 cross-country bike ride from San Diego to Boston

In eastern New Mexico April, 1985: we hit the plains with strong winds and periodic rain storms that came up behind us every few hours. We stayed in abandoned farmhouses to get out of the weather.
Many of these places appeared to have suffered foreclosure and people up and left quickly leaving some farm machinery in the fields and bank statements on the floor.
